Bookworms gather for book launch

MELVILLE – Love Books hosted the launch of author Pamela Power's latest offering.

Bookworms from far and wide attended the launch for author Pamela Power’s second offering, Things Unseen, at Love Books in Melville.

The book launch took place on 4 November and was facilitated by Joanne MacGregor.
Power said she read a lot as a child and the first book she read by herself was a book by Enid Blyton, Secret Seven. She describes that magical feeling of being transported to another world and wanting to do the same for other people. In terms of her latest offering, Power describes it as a fast-paced, exciting read.
“It’s a psychological thriller set in and around parks in Johannesburg. Emma’s mother is found with her head bashed in and her knickers around her ankles. The police think the gardener did it. Emma refuses to believe this,” said Power.

“An old lover arrives on the scene who’s an ex-cop turned security specialist. Emma’s husband is rabidly jealous and paranoid and his behavior becomes increasingly unhinged. Emma starts to suspect that her husband was somehow involved in her mother’s murder and becomes increasingly afraid of him.”
The author added that she likes to deal with serious issues in an accessible way, but she also has a dark sense of humour. Power said her writing style has been compared to writer Marian Keyes which is not strange considering that her father was Irish.
Margo Bertelsmann, who attended the book launch, said Power’s latest offering is a nail-bitter, entertaining, unexpected and world class. “I find her writing style casual, fast-paced and funny. I recommend everyone to read it and I plan on introducing it to my book club,” said Bertelsmann.
Power said that she loves to read books that are set locally and still remembers reading a book that was set in Harare as a child and being amazed when she recognised the places the writer spoke about.
“I hope people will be delighted and surprised to find that South African fiction is just as gripping and readable as international fiction, not to mention diverse,” concluded Power.
The book can be purchased at Love Books for R220 or at Clockwork Books websites.
