5 of SA’s most haunted places

Gearing up for a spook-tacular Halloween, here are 5 of the scariest places to visit in SA.

Halloween is the best time of year to get a chill up your spine or to indulge in the most haunted place in South Africa.

Kempton Park Hospital, Johannesburg:

The day after Christmas 1996 the hospital shut its doors. Many a braver person has since entered the abandoned place where machinery, beds, documents and hand prints can still be found.

The Uniondale Hitchhiker Uniondale, Eastern Cape:

The story goes that on Easter weekend in 1968, a couple was killed in a car accident – the woman was sleeping in the back seat when she met her sudden end. Now this dark-haired beauty haunts the roads around the town, hitching a ride on rainy nights with unsuspecting Good Samaritans, and then vanishing from the vehicle with a shrill laugh.

Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town:

The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest and largest of South Africa’s colonial buildings. In 1915, an unidentified two-metre tall figure was seen on the castle’s battlements. It was seen again in 1947, when it was observed to leap over the battlements. This semi-luminous ghost was seen over a period of weeks. It walked between the Leerdam and Oranje bastions, and was seen leaning over the parapet, looking into Darling Street.

The Supreme Court, Johannesburg:

Daisy de Melker is the first serial killer ever to be convicted in South Africa after killing off two husbands and a son through poisoning in the 1920s. She was hanged for her crimes in 1932 and is said to haunt most of the places associated with her, among others Court 3 in the Johannesburg Supreme Court.

Her home in Club Street in Turffontein is still standing and sometimes Daisy can still be seen there, peering out the upstairs window.

Jim Fouche High School, Bloemfontein

In 1967 the remains of a young girl were found underneath a newly built swimming pool. The discovery was followed by a series of strange events, such as: lights flickering, doors opening and closing, a girl heard singing. Her appearances are random and no one can tell when she will strike again.
