UPDATE: Footage emerges of Bunting Road fire

AUCKLAND PARK – Two lecture halls catch fire at UJ's Bunting Road Campus.

Two lecture halls at University of Johannesburg’s Bunting Road Campus caught fire shortly after 1pm this afternoon.

According to UJ’s senior manager of strategic communications, Kaamini Reddy, it seems that a technical fault in an overhead projector in a hall in the Con Cowan Building probably caused the fire. Although, an investigation will determine the cause.

No one was hurt.

Phenyo Leepile tweeted a video, where smoke can be seen filling the hallway of the building. People are seen using a hosepipe to fight the fire through a doorway. He tweeted, “Thanks to KG, Mdu & Nkukza for putting out the fire #UJ #UJFees #FeesMustFall”

Emergency services also attended to the scene.

Police are currently at the campus, and have barred the media from going near the venue. No protest action took place at the campus at the time of the incident.
