6 protesters arrested as violence breaks out at UJ

AUCKLAND PARK – One student is shot with a rubber bullet and is taken to hospital.

Six UJ students were arrested and at least one was injured when students brought Auckland park to a halt this afternoon during a #FeesMustFall protest that turned violent.

Approximately 500 students gathered on 26 September outside the Auckland Park Kingsway campus to join in on the nationwide protest #FeesMustFall movement.

This following the suggestion of Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande that universities increase their fees by a maximum of eight percent for the academic year of 2017.

Brixton Police spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff said that students met peacefully outside the school and had discussions among themselves, until violence erupted.

When things took a turn for the worse, police fired rubber bullets to disperse an increasingly aggressive crowd.

One student was shot in his left leg and taken to Helen Joseph Hospital for treatment, while six other protesters were arrested for public violence.
