UPDATE: Two students admitted to hospital after clash with private security

BRAAMFONTEIN – The injury tally after Wits students clashed with riot police and private security currently stands at four.

#FeeMustFall student leader Busisiwe Seabe has spoken out against the private security hired by Wits University and said that they were the cause of two students being admitted to hospital yesterday.

Seabe spoke on the steps of the Great Hall where students, security guards and riot police clashed and threw stones at each other after protesting students tried to gain entry to Solomon Mahlangu House. According to

According to Seabe, one student had to be rushed to hospital to receive stitches in the head after private security hit them with a baton, in their attempt to push students away from the entrance. She added that another student was pushed down the stairs by private security.

One student was admitted to Milpark Hospital and the other to Brenthurst Hospital. An additional two academics were also injured in the violence that ensued on campus yesterday.

“The students tried to enter peacefully so that we could congregate at Solomon Mahlangu House but were met with force from private security who started pushing and beating students off the Great Hall stairs and that’s when students started to defend themselves by breaking dustbins and throwing rocks at them to try and move private security so that we could enter,” Seabe further explained.

She added that the protest was moving into Braamfontein today as they wanted to connect with other campuses around the country who were also protesting for free education.

The Executive Committee of Council is expected to meet and discuss the issue of the fees increment for the next year.
