The White Lion to box for number 1 spot

WESTDENE – Rudolf van Heerden gets ready for the Last Fighter Standing SA Championships.

Rudolf van Heerden, also known as The White Lion, will fight for the number one spot at this year’s Last Fighter Standing (LFS) SA Championships to be held in October.

Van Heerden (37), who has been boxing since the age of seven, has participated in a total of 96 fights and has won 86 of them. The championship event is a mixed martial arts competition and Van Heerden will face fighters who use kick-boxing, boxing, wrestling, judo, jitu-jitsu, taekwondo and muay thai, among other fighting styles.

He will compete in the heavyweight division in the competition using his boxing techniques, with the semifinals set for 15 October at the Ticketpro Dome. Nine champions have been chosen from all provinces and will face each other during the semifinal round.

The White Lion, who trains twice a day for six days a week, said he is confident he will win.

“Boxing has taught me discipline and has taught me to be calm,” he said.

Even though he is the oldest participant at the LFS, and has been boxing for 30 years, Van Heerden has never been seriously hurt or broken any bones.

His father, Danie, proudly said he encouraged his five sons to start boxing at a young age. “I am very proud of Rudolf and the best man will definitely win the match,” Danie said.

Van Heerden’s coach from the Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre in Newlands where he trains, Martin Botes, said the training sessions have been going well.

“It has been a pleasure to train him, he is disciplined, fit and ready for LFT.”
