Community cleans Wilson and King Park

FAIRLAND – Residents roll up their sleeves and clean up their park.

On Saturday morning community members were not just all talk, they were ready for action too.

A collective of about 20 people gathered early in the morning during the weekend to cleanup Wilson and King Park in Fairland.

Donovan Brink, one of the community members who participated in the cleanup, said the day was exceedingly successful.

Brink explained that he and a couple of the other residents were concerned about the state of the park and its surroundings for the past couple of months.

To address their frustrations they decided to host a day where they invited members of the community to spend a few hours cleaning up the park. To make sure that they day would be successful, the group contacted City Parks, Pikitup and conservation societies to make sure they got all the help they required.

“What we want to do, is get rid of the invasive species that are choking the waterway here at the park. We also want to open up the wetland to keep the water clean,” said Brink.

Brink added that this would be the first of many projects planned to make Fairland an even better neighbourhood to live in. “We filled two skips with rubbish from all the dirt we collected in the park,” he said.

He concluded that they chose this park as their first project because they felt that it was a beautiful park that had been allowed to go slack. “Our councillors are dealing with so many other issues, so we looked at what we as residents could do. This is one of the things we could do to help.”
