Mozambique dominate Wits Women’s Basketball

BRAAMFONTEIN – Mozambique triumphs at the Wits Lady Bucks Basketball Tournament.

Wits University recently held its fourth annual women’s-only basketball tournament, welcoming teams from across the continent.

“The Wits Lady Bucks Tournament is especially hosted for women, to celebrate our women in sport,” said Ntshembo Vukeya, basketball sports officer at Wits Sport.

Vukeya said that most of the teams came from academic institutions and others were made of community members.

“Very few tournaments comprising women are being held and the university saw a great need to start a tournament of this kind, to support and encourage women to participate in basketball”.

Although the Wits team aimed for the top spot, Mozambique’s U18 side made early headway, serving up win after win. At the end, the Mozambican team took a 66–47 victory against the V&J team in the first division final. The winning team’s coach, Inaki Garcia, said the team had aimed to win.

“We expected the tournament to help us prepare for the Afrobasket,” he said.

The Women’s Afrobasket, also know as the Fédération Internationale de Basketball (Fiba) Africa Women’s Championship, is the continental basketball championship.

“The tournament at Wits saw players with high skill levels and the competition was very dynamic,” Garcia added.

He explained that in order to win, the team read the games well and changed their style as the situations in gameplay changed.

“The tournament involved a lot of players and games, it shows the love Wits has for basketball. We are thankful for the invitation,” he said.
