GISELLE PRETOURIUS: I believe the timing was correct and they have every right to do what they did. Clearly, he doesn't have morals. He needs to lead by example and so far he hasn't.

A silent protest was staged by four women during President Jacob Zuma’s address at the Independent Electoral Commission results centre in Tswhane.

The four protesters displayed placards that referenced the rape charges President Zuma faced in 2005 which was later dismissed in 2006. It was reported at the time that his rape accuser was one of his friend’s daughters.

We took to the streets to find out what residents thought of the silent protest.

Here is what they had to say:

NSIKA NDLOVU: I understand why the protest took place. I believe justice was not served when Zuma was not held accountable for his actions.

VICTOR VAN GEMERT: If the goal was to raise awareness about rape, it was effective. I believe the media focused too much on Zuma and not enough on the issue at hand, which is rape.

CARA SINGH: As women, we should always stand up and fight for our rights. The message that was sent with Zuma’s acquittal is unfair. Just because you have power doesn’t mean you should not be held accountable.

TSHIAMO MAKONDO: I think it was shocking and the protesters did not have a right to that during Zuma’s speech. They could have picked a different place to raise the issue.
