AUCKLAND PARK – Chaos erupted at the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) Gauteng Results Centre on 4 August, when presiding officers grew impatient when waiting to hand over results slips.

The IEC confirmed the incident on Thursday morning saying delays occurred when large numbers of said officers “converged in a short space of time to deliver their results slips and security materials”.

Votes were counted since the voting station started to close at 7pm on voting day. Some stations, like in North Riding, only closed much later. The IEC Gauteng Electoral officer, Masego Sheburi said no result slips went missing.

“Everything is now running smoothly. But if it were not for [Thursday] morning, I would have hoped to finished capturing the big metros’ results by [Thursday night],” he said.

Sheburi also explained that all the votes in Gauteng had already been counted by early Thursday morning and it is the capturing process that is underway.

The IEC, however, thanked the nearly 200 000 election officials who worked from early morning on voting day until early Thursday morning completing the voting and counting process.

The City of Johannesburg’s results by Friday morning, are still neck and neck as the ANC is ahead of the DA with less than a percentage point. At this time, 91 percent of votes countrywide had been captured.
