Paddlers beat 25 km race

The Dabulamanzi Canoe Club was represented by two of its paddlers at the Gerhard Nel Memorial race.

Two Dabulamanzi Club canoeists took to the Vaal River to paddle against over 40 other teams during the Gerhard Nel Memorial Race on 25 June.

The 40 plus boats, including Dabulamanzi members Grant Tate and Alasdair Muller, lined up on the banks of the Klip River, Danie Maclean Park to paddle to the Watuni clubhouse on the Vaal River at the North West University campus.

Jennie Dallas, public relations manager for the Gauteng Canoe Union, said the 25km race saw mostly flat water that provided excellent strength, endurance and stamina training for those preparing for Berg or Fish marathons.

Paddlers are currently training for the longest river race in South Africa, the 240km Berg River Canoe Marathon in July and the 80km Fish River Marathon, which they will face in October.

Tate and Muller finished the Gerhard Nel Memorial race within the cut off time, in 2 hours 38 minutes, as the 12th double to finish.
