Parkview Golf Club turns 100

PARKVIEW – Parkview Golf Club plans to involve the community more in upcoming events.

The Parkview Golf Club celebrated its 100th birthday with a gala golf day.

Members and the public celebrated the day on 1 July, and celebrities such as Derek Watts and John Robbie were also present. The golf gala began with James Fussel who took the first hit of the day.

The president of the club Colin Robinson said that it has been a hard journey but thanks to the members it has been a good journey. “We owe a great debt of gratitude to the staying power of members and their elected committees. They saw Parkview born from a vlei in the veld, faced threats from nature, greedy land owners, war, town planners and winds of political, social and economic change, and successfully guide it through 100 years,” said Robinson.

Franco Pellegrini, the vice president of the club who has been a member for 27 years said that he is proud to be a member of the club. “I hope the club gets to see another 100 years and will be seen more as part of the community,” said Pellegrini.

Parkview Golf Club has spawned golfing talent that included Bobby Locke, the country’s most successful golfer of the forties and fifties and several others who set a foundation for the country’s standing in international golf today.

The Parkview Golf Club director and head professional James Searson said that the club is a second home for the members. “Our goal is to grow the passion of golf, fill the club with passionate members and have an impact on the community,” he said. Searson is also enthusiastic about grooming children from a young age to start playing golf and also wants to have more women in the club.

Parkview Resident’s Association member Theresa Gibbon spoke on behalf of the residents and said that the community needs to support the club as it keeps their property value high. “There are plenty of events throughout the year such as star gazing and guided bird walks that are open to the public and can be enjoyed by the entire family,” said Gibbon.

The day was concluded with a dinner celebration for loyal members and their guests.
