5 arrested after business robbery

WESTDENE – Unlicenced firearms found in the possession of the five suspects.

Five suspects who allegedly robbed a business in Westdene at gunpoint, were all arrested.

The robbery happened on Perth Road at about 10am on 10 June. The five male suspects robbed a local supermarket and got away with an undisclosed amount of money, a cellphone and cigarettes. Brixton Police Station Commander, Colonel Ivan Perumal, said that the suspects got away without any shots being fired and no one was injured. Soon after the robbery, the owner coincidentally saw a police vehicle which he stopped and informed the officers of the robbery. The police chased after the suspects who were driving in a white Mercedes-Benz. “The suspects were cut off at Kingsway Avenue in Auckland Park where they were arrested,” said Col Perumal.

He added that the suspects did not resist arrest. “All the stolen goods were found and seized, including one licensed and two unlicensed firearms.”

The suspects appeared in Newlands Magistrates’ Court on 13 June, where their bail was denied. The suspects are still in police custody and will appear in court again after a week.
