Linden Police team up with security companies

LINDEN – Crimes such as murder, robbery, theft of motor vehicles are addressed at External Role Players Forum meeting.

Linden Police met with local security companies to identify crime trends in the Linden Police area and discuss ways to address them

Captain Alex Vermaak met the four sector commanders of Linden Police Station and local security companies on 7 June in their weekly External Role Players Forum meeting to discuss the crime that has been taking place in the different sectors. Security companies volunteering to assist the police with patrols has resulted in many criminals being caught.

According to crime statistics, common crimes occurred in all the sectors during the week show to have common crimes in all the sectors. These are crimes such as two business robberies in sector 1, shoplifting from Brightwater Commons Shopping Centre, theft of a laptop from a business, an attempted break-in, theft of a motor vehicle and theft of two bicycles from a resident’s home in Blairgowrie. According to Warrant Officer Sarel Bredenhand, there was an increase in driveway robberies and hijackings and that residents often resist when they are targeted. It was mentioned that murder is also starting to trend with four murders happening in nearby areas in 10 days.

Other crimes that have been happening in the sectors that are common are house break-ins, theft out of motor vehicles, theft of motor vehicles, theft of motor gates and business robberies. Capt Vermaak urged businesses to lock up earlier since it is winter. “Business owners should lock their security gates and sell through them if they have to,” said Capt Vermaak. He said that business owners are aware if their areas of business are a high risk and should use that information to their advantage.

The police and business owners agreed that contractors would not work after 8pm. “This creates an illusion that there is movement in the area and that attracts crime,” said Capt Vermaak. He said that they can also be a target for crime.

Victory Park Shopping Centre was also mentioned as being a hotspot for theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles. WO Bredenhand said that the centre has installed car jamming detectors, but they still urge the community to make sure their cars are securely locked.

Capt Vermaak said that the police are grateful for the local security companies that are involved and he urged the ones that are not to help keep the community safe.
