GALLERY: A little bit of Germany in Joburg

PARKTOWN – Everyone had a little German in them at the DSJ Schulbasar.

The Deutsche Internationale Schul Johannesburg held their annual Schulbasar, a real German experience, where an estimated 10 000 people enjoyed the festivities from morning until night.

On entry, over 18s were issued with a plastic beer mug and from there awaited South African Breweries and micro brewers, Brauhaus am Damm, Drayman’s, Bitburger and Windermere Cider, which were in full force, quenching the thirst of the Schulbasar with craft brews, such as lemon beer and elderflower cider on 21 May.

The Dixie Hillbillies and others entertained the crowds with live music, playing classics such as Carlos Santana’s Black Magic Woman. Children were entertained with PS2 stations, jumping castles, mini rides and traditional German games. For those who wanted more than a mug as a memento for the day, over 35 craft stalls sold their wares.

Community members got into the German spirit and dressed in traditional wear, such as lederhosen and dirndl. Schulbasar goer, Thandeka Nxumalo, said it was her third time attending a Schulbasar and it is always slightly different, but always enjoyable.

For Julia Dlamini it was her first German experience. “It is the first time that I remember, but my parents say they have brought me here before. I’ve enjoyed watching the performances on stage and I even bought myself a ring,” said Dlamini.

Alex Pohl and Marco Plank said that they loved the culture created at the Shulbasar, adding that a piece of Germany had been brought to SA. For Kim Kruger, Christine Ammon and Julia Trummer, the best part of the Schulbasar, was wearing the dirndl.
