Northcliff Corner intersection gets a face lift

NORTHCLIFF – Residents and the City of Joburg join forces to prevent urban decay in Northcliff.

Councillors and the City of Joburg took time out to clean the Northcliff Corner intersection on 13 May.

Ward 88 Councillor Pat Richards, DA candidate for Ward 88 Nicholas Lorimer, resident of Northcliff Gill Talevi, Pikitup, Metro Police, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Johannesburg Roads Agency partnered on this initiative and got their hands dirty.

This started when Talevi wanted to sell her house to her son, but he refused because of the state the neighbourhood was in. “I understood where he was coming from and I have also seen the state of the neighbourhood going down since I have been living here for 38 years,” she said. Talevi said that it is important for the residents to help with the maintenance of the area to protect their financial investments. After three meetings with Councillor Richards and other relevant parties, they finally managed to gather the resources they needed to start cleaning up.

The joint operation cleaned the 5th Street and Beyers Naudé Drive intersection, Milner Avenue and the Beyers Naudé Drive intersection and down Beyers Naudé Drive at Northcliff Corner.

Lorimer said that the ward is concerned about urban decay and they are doing everything in their power to prevent this. “We are trying to keep the area valuable before it is too late, and we are grateful for the City of Joburg coming out and helping,” said Lorimer. He said that some shop owners in the area were also involved in the initiative.

“We have been trying to beautify the area for a while and today, even with the little staff that we have, we have managed to do what we can,” said Richards.
