UPDATE: Arsonists burn down the UJ Sanlam Auditorium

AUCKLAND PARK – University officials believe that arsonists burnt down the Sanlam Auditorium.

University of Johannesburg (UJ) officials have said that the fire that destroyed the Sanlam Auditorium at its Auckland Park Kingsway Campus, was started by arsonists.

The fire occurred at about 2am on 16 May.

UJ officials held a media briefing at the campus later in the afternoon, and said that they could not confirm who had started the fire.

“Perpetrators will brought to book,” said Vice Chancellor, Prof Ihron Rensburg. He explained that arsonists caused a fire that caused about R100-million worth of damages. “We will do everything within our power and cooperation with the authorities to track these criminals down, prosecute them and send them to prison for as long as possible,” said Rensburg.

Arsonists allegedly fire-bombed UJ’s main 1 000-seater auditorium after breaking into the building.

Also destroyed were computer laboratories, including equipment students used for career assessments and guidance.

More details to follow.
