Belly dancing at school

LINDEN – A day of bohemian splendour will be hosted at Casa Do Sol School for all to marvel at.

Gypsy Rhythms Middle Eastern Dance Company will host an experience to remember at Casa Dol Sol School.World Belly Dance Day and a bohemian grove market will be held on 14 May.

Co-owner of the dance company, Vanessa John said that this event will be held to raise money for the school.

“We aim to raise much-needed funds and donations for Casa Do Sol School while sharing the beauty of our beloved belly dance with the community,” said John. She said the school assists those in need and provides breakfast for its disadvantaged pupils. “They go through high volumes of cereal, porridge, and long life milk, and rely heavily on donations of non-perishable food items,” said John.

She added that after collaborating with other studios and organising some of the Joburg events of previous years, she and co-owner, Candida di Giandomenico decided to host their own World Belly Dance Day event. “We’re happy to be sharing the stage with fellow studios in the Joburg belly dance community who will assist us in showcasing the different styles of belly dance in the performances throughout the day,” explained John. On the day, there will also be free lessons and a ‘Shimmython’ competition open to all.

When asked why they chose to host their event at the school, John said that Casa Do Sol School is their home. “We recently moved premises from Ferndale to the school hall in Linden, it made sense for us to host this event at our new studio, and to choose the school as our cause, our World Belly Dance initiative in 2016,” said John.
