Making crafts, making friends

ROOSEVELT PARK – Residents can now be creative on a weekly basis while they make friends in a Creative Crafters group.

Being creative and creating one-of-a-kind artworks can be easy if one opens oneself up to the endless possibilities.

Creative Crafters is a group of creative artists who meet on a weekly basis at the Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre to create artworks of their choice.

The organiser of the group, Ina Horstink, said that the members mainly do decoupage and mosaic crafts, but the crafters can do any kind of art they like. “They just tell me what they want to make and I tell them where they can get the supplies,” explained Horstink.

Vicky Fah was busy making a stepping stone out of colourful mosaic tiles. “I come here for the company, but I also like being creative,” said Fah. Sue Gibb attended her first class on 21 April as she recently moved from the East Rand. “I need to make friends so I came down here. I am so impressed with the centre and what they offer,” said Gibb.

Another member, Jane Matthysen was busy tracing beehives from a colouring book. She explained that she will copy the pictures onto a jug and then glaze it. “I just love this group. They are the dearest people,” said Matthysen. A half-finished porcelain tortoise with mosaic tiles stood on the table. His maker, Arlene Curtis said that she loves to make things with her hands and then give them away as presents. “I am going to give this tortoise to a friend of mine,” said Curtis.

The oldest member of the group, Joan Rees (94) said that she is not a very artistic person, but she joined the group for the company. “My family makes their own Christmas crackers and I put beads onto teaspoons to go into the crackers,” explained Rees.

It is clear that these women have made close friendships among the glue bottles, paint brushes and mosaic tiles scattered on the table.
