Be alert, be aware

BERARIO – Making a difference (Mad) hosts its monthly domestic watch event and asks domestics to be mindful of the information they share.

Making a difference (Mad) hosted a domestic watch meeting that aided domestics with valuable information. The subject matter for the day was how to be alert on security of the house and who you share valuable information with.

The event, which was held at Berario Recreational Centre was hosted by Mad representative, Trish Strickett. She shared that trust within the household is very important. She went on to add that if there is trust in a home, then the threat of danger coming from those whom you are meant to trust is lessened. She expressed that domestics need to be very alert with whom they share information about the home. “People who you do not know could lead you to divulge private information about the home and use that information to their advantage,” said Strickett.

She explained that criminals could also leave markings for their partners to alert them about the household. “They could leave things that could go unnoticed to the average person, but could tip the criminals on whether this is a house that they should steal from,” said Strickett.

The day was also joined by Sergeant Maggie Mushasha of the Linden Police who vehemently expressed that people should never make themselves the victim. Sgt Mushasha indicated that people should be alert and aware of their surroundings. “Do not be a victim due to your own negligence, make sure that your gates are closed, ensure that there are no household equipment that could be used to harm you,” said Sgt Mushasha.

She concluded that the community should not hesitate to call the police should they feel uncomfortable about something they see. “We cannot work without you, we need you as much as you need us.”
