200 players yell checkmate

ROOSEVELT PARK – Pupils and adults come together for a two-day chess tournament.

A friendly chess tournament organised by the Joburg North West Chess Club took place on 11 and 12 March at Franklin D Roosevelt Primary School in Roosevelt Park.

Wendy Kowalik, teacher at the school and parent at JNW said that the tournament is for primary and high school pupils as well as adults. She added that about 200 players from everywhere in Johannesburg took part in the tournament.

Rows of tables with chess sets on them were set up and for eager players to practise. A player, Khanya Mazibuko (15) said that chess is a very nice sport. “It furthers your thinking and helps with education. He explained that to him chess is like life, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. “Even if you don’t succeed at first, try – one should never give up,” said Mazibuko.

JNW wants to motivate people from any age to play chess as it is very good for thinking and concentrating.
