Famous actor discusses his book

AUCKLAND PARK – Actor Jerry Mofokeng discussed his book In Love and Intimate at the UJ library.

Well-known actor Jerry Mofokeng engaged his audience on the topic of marriage during a discussion of his book at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on 10 March.

Speaking from his own experience, the book discusses marriage in the modern age and gives married couples advice on how to have a long and lasting marriage.

Coming from a poor background, Mofokeng described how he met his wife to whom he has been married for over 35 years.

“It was not easy. There were many ups and downs but we managed to get through everything together. There were even moments when we contemplated divorce but through having faith in each other, we made it through the many years of our marriage,” he explained.

He further explained that he was motivated to write the book titled In Love and Intimate as he was tired of reading books that did not resonate with his environment, culture and reality.

“In the book, I encourage men to love their partner the way they want to be loved. Let’s equip ourselves with the tools to make the marriage work. You must put hard work and effort into a marriage for it to last,” Mofokeng advised.

Even though the book was released last year, Mofokeng said that he had other engagements that did not allow him to market the book, hence he was doing so now.

Marlene de Beer, a lecturer at the department of social work at UJ, said that the book was in line with decolonizing the curriculum and giving space for African voices and stories to be heard.

“Even though this book applies to married heterosexual Christian couples, there are many transferable reflections that offer educational as well as humorous insights, which make it a personal growth self-study guide. The book also has value for the social work students as they can use what they learn from the book in their work with individual counselling sessions, group work and community education settings,” De Beer pointed out.
