Take caution on the road

JOBURG – Motorists are advised to be careful during wet weather conditions.

Police and ER24 warned residents to drive cautiously on wet roads this week, and watch out for fallen trees.

Thunderstorms expected this week may result in a number of delays on the road, such as trees being uprooted or broken branches falling onto roads, car accidents and heavy traffic.

Metro Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said that during the wet weather conditions motorists should reduce the speed of their vehicles.

“There is a tendency for motorists to lose control of their cars when the roads are wet. I advise people to keep a safe distance from other cars and keep headlights on at all times. In the event where a tree has fallen onto the road, motorists should call the Joburg Emergency call centre for assistance,” said Supt Minaar.

Er24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said that motorists should be cautious while on the road during the wet season. She offers some useful tips for motorists:

  • Make sure windscreen wipers are in a good condition
  • Before driving listen to the weather and traffic reports
  • Avoid areas where you cannot access the road due to fallen tree branches
  • Pull over when rain makes visibility difficult
  • Pedestrians are urged not to walk in rainy weather, and cross rivers or areas that are flooded.
