St Stithians win Southern Gauteng Tennis Association Inter-School Tournament

FAIRLANDS – Over 20 schools in Joburg participated in the inter-school tournament on 5 March.

The Southern Gauteng Tennis Association hosted an inter-school tournament, where over 20 schools participated in Joburg. The tennis matches took place at Olivedale Tennis Club, Fairland Tennis Club, Rand Park Primary and Hoërskool Linden.

The inter-school tournament finals took place on 5 March, at the Fairland Tennis Club. The event is the top Gauteng High School Tennis Tournament in Gauteng.

Southern Gauteng Tennis Association’s event coordinator, Allen Flint said that the tournament happens twice a year and is divided into a junior and senior event.

“This was a good competition, all the schools that participated, played well. The schools performed at a high level despite the hot weather conditions, ” Flint said.

St Stithians came first in the overall tournament. The points were as follows:

  • St Stithians College (54)
  • St Johns College (45)
  • King Edward School (36)
  • Northcliff High School (23)
  • Helpmekaar (22)

St Stithians College pupil, Dylan Walters said that the overall tournament was a tough competition. He considers St Johns as the most challenging team they played, especially the doubles’ couple towards the end.

St Stithians College coach, Marius Masencamp said that the players practise five times a week and this is the third tournament that they have won. “We attended a festival together where the team got the opportunity to spend time together. The fantastic team spirit is one of the factors that help us play well together,” said Masencamp.

He added that St Stithians will be hosting a Easter Festival where six schools will participate on 24, 26 and 28 of March. The sports festival is also open to the public.
