Comedian keeps audiences in stiches

SOPHIATOWN – Proudly Coloured Comedy will perform a one-night-only show themed Dust to Diamonds.

The Proudly Coloured Comedy collective is back to entertain audiences at Emperors Palace. The comedy show will feature some of SA’s funniest comedians in a one-night-only performance.

Comedian Virgil Prins, a Sophiatown resident is one of the acts part of the comedy show, that will take place on 5 March.

Prins, as he is fondly known on stage said that he took an interest in comedy when he was still at Rhodes University.

“I graduated from Rhodes with a degree in Law and Management in 2012. Initially I enjoyed making people laugh and was told I was funny by my peers. That is one of the reasons that inspired me to pursue a career as a comedian. During varsity I started doing stand up on campus and performing at small shows,” said Prins.

He moved back to his hometown in the Eastern Cape, after he completed his studies and worked as a teacher. In 2013 he moved to Joburg to pursue a career as a comedian and look for better opportunities.

The stand-up comedian represented SA in Switzerland at the Jokenation Gala Evening last year. He was the only one chosen out of 1000 entrants in the international competition.

Prins said he has worked with some of SA’s most popular comedians such as Loyiso Gola, Marc Lottering, Tall Ass Mo’ and Joey Rasdien.

“I have learnt something different from all the comedians I have worked with. For Proudly Coloured Comedy, I share the stage with Shimmy Isaacs, Dillan Oliphant, Hamish Kyd and Tracey Lee Olive. Audiences can expect a culture-sharing experience from comedians who have different experiences and point of views. It is not only about coloured people though,” explained Prins.

The Proudly Coloured Comedy takes place on 5 March in the Theatre of Marcellus at 8pm. Tickets are available at Computicket from R150 per person.
