Northcliff Bowl strikes out

JOBURG – To add to its list of accomplishments, Northcliff Bowl will host the VII Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championships.

November will mark the first time a commonwealth tenpin bowling championship will be held on African soil. Johannesburg’s Northcliff Bowl has been named host of this year’s VII Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship and the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Federation (CTBF) congress.

The championship will be held from 19 to 27 November and is expected to attract up to 20 commonwealth nations, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, and Cananda. The bid submitted by the Tenpin Bowling Association of South Africa (TBASA), supported by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, promises warm South African hospitality and a memorable event for all bowlers, dignitaries and supporters.

Northcliff Bowl is the premier bowling centre in the country because of its 24 lanes and top-notch equipment.

When he announced the successful TBASA bid, CTBF President, Julian Pace-Bonello, noted that South Africa has been the host country for many prestigious international sporting tournaments and will host the Commonwealth Games in 2022. In terms of bowling, South Africa hosted the 2011 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup.

Northcliff Bowl in Northcliff Corner Shopping Centre was rebuilt in 2011 especially for the world cup, and features 24 QubicaAMF equipped lanes, pins, lane-oiling technology, a fully operational Pro Shop and extensive ball-storage facilities.

For the bowlers, a choice of accommodation options will be offered, including a five-star award winning hotel chain, which includes restaurants, bars, a health spa and gym.

TBASA president, Vaughn Williams, said, “The most important aspect of this is to give tenpin bowling more of a sporting reputation. Not just for Joburg but for national sporting bodies. I don’t think the public knows two world cups were held at the Northcliff Bowl. It is also a great way for the country to get involved with other countries without a huge cost to us. All other countries see is crime in our country, holding these championships exposes the country as a whole.”
