Roosevelt High School packs 40 000 meals

ROOSEVELT PARK – Pupils of Roosevelt High School are passionate about giving back to the less-fortunate.

Pupils from Roosevelt High School packed 40 000 meals for Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa on 12 February. The City of Joburg donated 30 000 meals that were packed by the pupils and handed over to the Stop Hunger Now organisation.

Roosevelt High School deputy principal Henk Ferreira said that the school got involved in the initiative for the first time last year. “Due to the great response and participation from the pupils we decided to participate again this year. Stop Hunger brings in various dried food where pupils pack them into packs, that are later put into boxes and distributed to charities,” said Ferreira.

He added that due to the great enthusiasm, an additional truck load of 10 000 meals was brought in to pack, which exceeded the target by 10 000 meals. In addition to their participation in Stop Hunger Now SA, pupils handed over over 46 boxes on 15 February. The boxes that made up around 98 meals were donated to
Suid–Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie (SAVF) who will deliver the boxes to nursery schools in and around Joburg.

“I would like to thank Christel Venter for managing this initiative and to the pupils at Roosevelt High School. Everyone’s participation made it possible for 120 children to have three meals for five days a week for an entire year,” said Ferreira.
