GALLERY: Swim gala makes for social gathering

RANDPARK RIDGE – The Super 5 swim gala hosted by Rand Park High School gave a swimming platform for swimmers from five Johannesburg schools.

There were dives, splashes and long breaths as five schools competed in the Super Five swim gala at Rand Park High School  on 11 February.

The gala is an annual event hosted by Rand Park High School. It is an invitational gala that invites swimmers from five government high schools in Johannesburg. Present in the pool were the hosts, Northcliff , Hyde Park, Bryanston and Fourways high schools.

Each school had two lanes of swimmers that participated in the four swimming strokes as well as relays. The gala hosted both girls and boys in age groups from 14 to 18. The warm and sunny weather made supporters come out in their masses to cheer the swimmers on. Although it was a competition, the day was hosted in great spirit and for the love of the sport. Pupils from the various schools mixed with each other and likely made new friends.

Aaron van der Heever, Matric pupil and star swimmer of Rand Park High School, said that it was a very nice day for swimming. “Even though it is a competition, it makes for a nice network and we get a chance to be social,” said Van der Heever.
