Heritage study of Brixton and Auckland Park

BRIXTON – People associated with the struggle against apartheid and those living in heritage places can now share their stories.

A heritage study of Brixton, Auckland Park and immediate surroundings is being conducted and documented by Tsica Heritage Consultants, a Westdene-based company.

Residents living in the local heritage homes and places associated with the struggle against apartheid, including those who know of historic figures associated with the areas are asked to send their stories or photographs to help complete the story of the area.

Residents who believe that they live in heritage houses can send a description, photographs and drawings or tell Tsica why the house is significant.

Architectural historian Monika Läuferts said the City of Joburg has appointed Tsica Heritage Consultants to conduct a comprehensive heritage analysis of the areas that are affected by the Corridors of Freedom development.

“Now we are still collecting every heritage piece of information from residents. When we are done, we will present everything to the City of Joburg,” she said, explaining that, “I am a partner of Tsica. Our main interest lies in the protection and documentation of the heritage of the historically-significant places in Southern Africa.”

Läuferts said that Tsica has done extensive work on industrial heritage in Joburg and have fought for the preservation of many industrial sites that many have not deemed valuable.

“Tsica is also keenly aware of the heritage value of many buildings in the areas.”

Läuferts urged residents to get involved.
