School donates 9 000 litres of water

LINDEN – School accepts challenge to collect water and manages to fill a truck to help people in the drought stricken Free State.

Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys in Linden accepted a challenge and excelled by collecting 9 000 litres of water. De La Salle Holy Cross College challenged schools in January to collect water for drought-stricken areas in the country.

Connie Piquito, the water coordinator for Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys, said that the loaded truck left the school on 1 February, bound for Kestell and Qwaqwa in the Free State province. “We sent out letters to parents on 22 January asking for water donations,” said Piquito. Apart from donations from pupils, Munro Flowers and Vermaak attorneys donated 40 five-litre bottles of water. According to Piquito, Hoërskool Linden filled half of their mini school bus with water and the Gereformeerde Kerk Linden donated two bakkie loads of water.

Piquito mentioned that she worked alongside Eldré Buys, a teacher at Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys, to collect the water. “We managed to get 100 25-litre bottles of water filled up at the school’s borehole,” said Piquito. The pupils of the school were involved in every aspect of the collection, helping to fill the water bottles and load the truck. According to Piquito, a father of a pupil works at Wimbels Transport and organised the transport. Hollard Insurance sponsored the Diesel and payed for toll fees. She further said that the water was distributed in Kestell and Qwaqwa on the morning of 2 February.

“The pupils learned that they should care for other people. Our pupils are fortunate, they have a swimming pool to swim in and also don’t know how it is to be thirsty,” said Piquito.
