VIDEO: Puppets ease nerves of young school-goers

EMMARENTIA – Children interact with excitement with a little bunny puppet as he recites the alphabet and sings songs.

Going to school for the first time could be a nerve-wracking experience. Kinder Theatre at the Kinderspiel, toy store in Emmarentia, hosted a puppet show to ease little ones in preparing for this big moment.

Nogwaja goes to school, took children through the life of Nogwaja, the little bunny who has to go to the forest school for the first time. He was nervous while greeting his mother, but quickly settled into his new classroom with his teacher and new friends. Children attending the show screamed out in excitement while Nogwaja recited the bunny alphabet with his teacher. “E is for elephant,” shouted an excited boy and “X is for zebra,” shouted another audience member. The lesson learned is that school is fun, because you make new friends and learn new things.

Founder of the theatre, Ruth Kellow, said that the theatre has been running for four years. “We want to introduce theatre to children and teach them the ethics of theatre. They need to concentrate on the story.” Kellow further said that they do not only have puppet shows, but a variety of marionette shows, physical theatre, shadow theatre and comedy for children. She further explained that children tend to watch everything digital. They learn to concentrate. “If you don’t listen you miss the story, because their is no pause or stop button,” said Kellow.

She said that the theatre offers a bonding time between parents and children. “Parents can’t drop the child off, they watch the show with them and when the child has questions they can start a conversation with their parent,” said Kellow.

The shows at the Kinder theatre is on weekly on Tuesday afternoons at 3.30pm and Saturdays at 10am.
