GALLERY: Pass on information regarding crime

BERARIO – Making a Difference (Mad) has a meeting to educate domestic workers on the importance of anonymous crime tip-offs.

Making a Difference (Mad) held its monthly meeting at Berario Recreation Centre on 19 January. The topic for the day was how one could contribute towards a better South Africa by passing on information anonymously.

In attendance was an audience of attentive and enthusiastic domestic workers who were willing to learn and introduce into their lives the very useful information that was shared with them. The speaker at the event was Diane Strickett, a suburb coordinator for Fairland, Northcliff and Berario. She spoke wisely about vigilance and reporting any alarming happenings around their neighbourhoods.

The meeting answered questions like: What does reporting crime anonymously mean, and what type of information is needed? Strickett urged the domestics not to be afraid to voice their concerns if they are either to hear about, or see something potentially harmful happen.

“It’s very important that they not feel scared or apprehensive about speaking out about dangers they could be privy to as this will ensure not only their safety but the safety of the community,” said Strickett.

She went on to add that domestics are at their employer’s house more than their employer, so they see more of what happens around the neighbourhood. She said that this is precisely why housekeepers need to make friends among themselves so as to heighten the number of people who are on alert.

Strickett furthermore added that all community members need to ensure they know the police officers in their precinct. She said that this would aid in the level of trust of between the public and the authorities tasked with protecting them.

“The point of these meetings is to share information that the domestics can take home and incorporate within their lives, from their place of work to their own homes,” she concluded.
