GALLERY: Yogis say ‘namaste’ on the dam

EMMARENTIA – Yoga enthusiasts meet to take their passion onto the dam.

When you think “yoga”, the first thing to come to mind must be a studio full of nible men and women who just seem to be so tranquil and centred.

Your last thought would be seeing these men and women leave the hardwood studio floors for a paddle board and a lesson on the dam. Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, thanks to three yogis Chad Andrews, Steven Heyman and Susana Smith, played host to these keen students who wished to escape the confines of four walls to be even closer to nature.

Smith said that the classes started about four months ago and have steadily increased in number over time. She added that many might think it intimidating to balance on a board. She divulged that another reason some are timid to join is the thought of falling into the dam water.

“Falling into the water is something that is bound to happen especially for beginners, but you get up on your board and try again,” said Smith.

She explained that she has been a yoga instructor for the past six years and also designs and creates yoga pants. The concept of having a class on the dam had always been something she wanted to do and when Andrews and Heyman approached her about working to together host classes on the dam, she leaped at the idea.

Smith said she encourages everyone to at least give it a try. She added that it is a lovely way to be outside and closer to nature.

Monika Hamilton, one of the students, said that she loved the energy and scenery.

“It is fantastic to have it outside, being surrounded by all of this nature was just lovely,” said Hamilton.

The class uses its Facebook page Yoga Works to spread the word about their class dates.
