BRAAMFONTEIN – South African Legends Awards launches a non-profit organisation which aims to curb the cycle of poverty in the industry.

The South African Legends Awards launched a non profit organisation called the Ikhaya Lama SA Legends on 14 November at the Market Laboratory.

The South African Legends Awards was established in 2011 by EN productions to celebrate the contribution made by musicians, actors, directors, photographers, journalists, producers, news anchors and radio producers.

Ikhaya Lama SA Legends name means a home for legends.

The organisers realised over the years that, honouring industry professionals through an awards ceremony is not enough to deal with the challenges they face with poverty and unemployment in the industry.

Founder of EN productions Elizabeth Nchabeng said she recognised that a number of legends die poor with no legacy left behind after their many years in the industry and their memorable contributions.

“The awards are one aspect in honouring South African legends. We wanted to establish something more sustainable not only for the legends but also for the next generation of talented young people in their respective industries,” Nchabeng.

The launch in Braamfontein, was attended by actors, musicians, directors and producers and some of them are still active in the industry.

Tumi Masemola, JRoss and Beritha entertained the crowd with their soulful performances during the NPO launch.

Actors and performers such as Joe Mapela, Abigail Khubeka,, Jerry Mofokeng and Ringo Madlingozi were there to show their support.

Actor Joe Mafela popularly known for his role as Sdumo in Sgudi ‘Snaysi said the initiative was positive that it was long over due for local industry legends and professionals.

“This will help enrich the craft of future generation in their professions, assist actors leave behind a legacy and create employment in the industry which is a vital aspect,” said Mafela.

Nchabeng also said that besides curbing the vicious cycle of poverty in the industry through the NPO they plan to provide local performers with necessities like medical aid, funeral policies and build a museum for local legends to offer mentorship programmes to the younger generation.

The next SA legends awards ceremony will take place in September next year.
