Three water tanks stolen amid water shortages

WESTDENE – It is alleged that water tanks are stolen to be used for storage purposes.

Three 2 500-litre plastic JoJo tanks were stolen in Westdene.

Ward 69 Councillor Katja Naumann, confirmed this incident.

“Three men were also apprehended in Crosby for trying to steal a tank,” she said.

She further said that the brass tap was stolen off one tank in Brixton.

According to Colonel Madelein Bunce of Sophiatown Police Station, no case has been reported thus far.

Communications and marketing manager of Johannesburg Water, David Sibiya said that he was not aware of this matter.

“I cannot understand how they steal these tanks, it makes no sense,” said Sibiya.

According to Sibiya, people who steal these tanks are taking advantage of a very bad situation.

“The tanks are very easy to remove when empty and make for great storage,” said Councillor Naumann.

She added that there are no security measures put in place to assure that these tanks are not stolen.
