10 Safety tips for using fireworks

JOBURG – ER24 urges people to be careful when lighting fireworks in their areas during festivals and religious holidays.

ER24 has encouraged community members to be careful when setting fireworks alight during celebrations, as the incorrect use of fireworks could lead to severe or fatal injuries.

ER24 offers residents 10 safety tips when it comes to the handling of fireworks:

  • Only use fireworks in designated areas and check with your local council or municipality before lighting fireworks in your area.
  • It is advised to never light fireworks while under the influence of alcohol.
  • Having a burning firework in your hand could lead to serious injuries. Do not play or run around with burning fireworks.
  • Make sure that your clothes are not close to or hanging over burning fireworks and also avoid setting fireworks alight in confined spaces, indoors, in vehicles, near people and other flammable materials such as dry grass.
  • Take caution that fireworks can malfunction or go off in the wrong direction.
  • Keep water or a fire extinguisher close by in the event of an emergency.
  • Fireworks that are not ignited are also deemed dangerous. A spark or open flame can set off fireworks if they are left in close proximity.
  • Keep fireworks away from children depending on their age as they may not understand the consequences of not handling fireworks safely or may want to experiment with them.
  • Take precautionary measures to ensure that pets are kept safe away from fireworks as they are affected by loud noises, may panic and try to run away to seek shelter or be injured.
  • Keep emergency numbers close by in case of an emergency.
