UJ students in altercation with security guards

AUCKLAND PARK – Two UJ students get manhandled by security guards at the Kingsway campus.

As students across the country prepare to write their exams a small group of students from the University of Johannesburg are continuing their protest against outsourcing. Two students from UJ were allegedly attacked by the university’s security company after they attempted to occupy the office of Vice Chancellor Irhon van Rensburg.

Media liaison for UJ’s Division of Institutional Advancement Herman Esterhuizen confirmed that the incident happened late on 2 November at their Kingsway campus in Auckland Park. He said that there were around 10 students who were demanding to see the management after hours and alleged that two students became aggressive and refused to leave resulting in them being physically removed off the premises. He could not confirm what acts of aggression it is alleged that students displayed that resulted in the altercation. However, Esterhuizen pointed out that the students wanted to resolve the issue of outsourcing but added that the university had already responded. “The university did release a statement on the issue of outsourcing and we stand by that statements in regards to the matter. A task team has been busy with the matter but due to the zero per cent fees increase the university has to now revise its operations budget in order to find the funds,” he said.
