Afrikaans thriller soon in theatres

JOBURG – Gruesome action infused Afrikaans mystery-thriller, Die Ontwaking (The Awakening) will be released in South African cinemas in February 2016.

The new Afrikaans mystery-thriller Die Ontwaking (The Awakening) will be released in cinemas across South Africa in February next year.

The film has been made in collaboration between The Showroom Theatre, Advantage Entertainment and Enigma Pictures.

Starburst Promotions marketing manager Alishia van Deventer said the film is based on the first book of a trilogy written by well-know author Chris Karsten.

“The film is a huge success as it broadens the horizons of local films,” said Van Deventer.

She said the film is a gruesome action infused mystery-thriller about the psyche and motivations of a serial killer.

“The film is about a small gallery owner that specialises in African masks and has a collection of tattoos, that he obtained from the skin of female victims. A young female spy is on his case and could be the victim of his new project – a female face mask of human flesh,”

“This film plays with your head and lets you think what a serial killer thinks like,” added Van Deventer.

Van Deventer said the film won the Best Film Award during the 2015 Indie Karoo Film Festival.

Writer and producer Johnny Breedt explained he read the book during a flight to the USA and was so intrigued by it that he decided to turn it into a film.

Breedt said he never thought his first film would be so dark but his intention was to take an audience to uncomfortable places.

Van Deventer said the film was chosen to be shown during the opening night of the Eden Independent Film Festival that will take place in George on 30 October – 1 November.
