NORTHCLIFF– A group of cancer survivors, patients and volunteers attend a high tea at the Silver Teaspoon Victorian Tea Room to raise funds for Wings of Hope Cancer Support.

Wings of Hope Cancer Support hosted a high tea at the Silver Teaspoon Victorian Tea Room on 18 October to raise funds towards the organisation.

On a sunny afternoon a group of volunteers attended the Wings of Hope high tea dressed in lovely pink outfits in support of the fundraising event and international breast cancer month.

Guests got the opportunity to purchase a ticket for R250 per person, where cupcakes, tea and other delicious items were provided on beautifully decked tables. There was also a pop-up store where guests could purchase items to raise funds.

There were guest speakers who spoke about the organisation and their experience with it.

Breast cancer survivor John Kirtland said he was quite surprised when he was diagnosed with breast cancer as a man. “I honestly felt indifferent about being diagnosed with breast cancer given I have a lengthily history of cancer in my family. I received help immediately when I was diagnosed,” he said.

According to the South African National Cancer Registry one in a 1 000 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. About 5 to 10 per cent of breast cancers are hereditary caused by abnormal genes that pass from parent to child.

Founding member, director and chairperson of Wings of Hope, Christel Kilma established the organisation three years ago along with other founding members. She has been a cancer survivor for the past 11 years and decided that when she got better she wanted to help other people in a similar or exact situation as her.

“The money that is raised during fundraisers is to organise our public meetings, get the resources we need to do our work and assist other people within our organisation,” she said.

She also said that in every meeting there are different speakers who are specialists in industries related to cancer treatment who educate the organisation’s members and answer their questions.

The next Wings of Hope public meeting will be held on 24 October at their premises in Randburg.
