GALLERY: Community members march against police killings

HILLBROW – Fallen members of the police are honoured during a march.

Members of the South African Police Service risk their lives every day in the line of duty to protect people in society. There are instances where they too are victims of crime.

The Hillbrow Cluster hosted a march and prayer in the streets of Hillbrow where members of the SAPS, community, business stakeholders, different

churches and traditional healers participated.

The cluster includes Linden, Jeppe, Norwood, Parkview, Rosebank, Yeoville and Cleveland police stations.

Constable Carol Mulamu, spokesperson of Linden Police Station said the purpose of the march and prayer was to involve the community in raising awareness against the increasing number of police murders.

“We are addressing the issue of hostels in areas such as Cleveland, where dangerous weapons were discovered during a raid. Two officers were murdered by residents from the Cleveland hostel. Five suspects were arrested for their murders,” she said.

Scores of marchers filled the streets chanting ‘Stop Police Killings’.

People stopped what they were doing to witness this symbolic march.

Musa Shihambe, who led the prayer, said they gathered to pay their respects to members of the police who lost their lives in the line of duty.

“We are tired of brutal killings of our police officers in our communities. Our aim is to save our police from being killed like dogs and flies,” he said.

People who joined the march were asked to bow their heads in prayer to acknowledge those who had lost their lives– before a wreath was hung on a tree to honour the sacrifice of the fallen heroes.
