GALLERY: Blackheath dancers excel at competition

BLACKHEATH– Dancers from Dancexchange studios in Blackheath took home the big prizes at the recent Gauteng Dance festival.

Dancers from Dancexchange studios in Blackheath have excelled at the Gauteng Dance Festival which was held at Robin Hills Primary School recently. Taylor Swanepoel took home a solo A++ for her performance and Jacquie Graham was announced as both senior and modern championship winner. The modern dance senior girls received A+++ for their their routine and the junior tap girl group received an A+++ for their Too Hot routine.

Collen Brookes, who was one of the first students at the studio, said that the studio was started in 1977 by Margie Wells, and offers instruction in modern dance, tap and hip-hop dancing among other dance genres. She added that they were very proud of their dancers who showed excellent training, and that it was all thanks to their trainer Jan Bodekker.

“Dancing is a fun way to be active, a great way to meet new people, and allows one to express their creativity,” she said. She pointed out Jackie Graham, one of their students who has stood out in recent years, and said that it was a nice feeling to have had a hand in shaping someone’s career. Jan Bodekker said that the dancers had put in a lot of hard work and she, as their dance instructor, was very proud of them.
