AUCKLAND PARK – Campus Square Shopping Centre hijacking and shootout – suspect is discharged from hospital.

A wounded suspect is recovering after he was discharged from hospital, following a shootout with the police at Campus Square Shopping Centre, Auckland Park.

Brixton Police Station Commander Colonel Michelle Jones said the vehicles identification unit is investigating cases of car hijacking after three suspects were bust driving two stolen cars on 19 September.

Col Jones said the flying squad tracked and followed the suspects from Beyers Naudé Drive after one of the two cars were stolen from Killarney Mall on the same day.

“Police followed the speeding suspects who were at the time driving two cars. The chase went on until Campus Square where the shootout started,” she said.

Col Jones said the men are in their 20s.

She said they were waiting for the vehicles identification unit to investigate the matter further before going to court.

According to one security guard who was at the scene when it happened, one of the suspects’ cars entered the Campus Square basement parking, hit a mound of rubble and came to a standstill, while the other one took a different street, ending up near the Absa Bank’s call centre fence.

Police came upon the suspects, and, according to Col Jones, the suspects opened fire.

A shootout ensued and one of the suspects was wounded, before the flying squad managed to arrest all three suspects.
