Man murdered in Sophiatown

SOPHIATOWN – An unidentified man was killed after being stabbed in Sophiatown.

A case of murder was opened by the Sophiatown Police after a man was allegedly stabbed to death in Sophiatown on 14 September.

Sophiatown Police media liaison officer, Warrant Officer Thomas de Bruyn confirmed that a case of murder had been opened at the station, after a man, who had been stabbed “several times”, died on Sol Street in the evening. “A post-mortem is scheduled to be performed and we will know more then,” he said.

De Bruyn could not confirm what led to the death of the man, as little is known yet about what took place. This because the first person on scene only arrived after the stabbing took place. The victim was found alive, but later died on scene.

Dauw Steyn, Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch chairperson, said that they received a message on their WhatsApp group that someone had been stabbed.

“What we know from the witness is that he was walking down the road and saw two men walking towards him. When he got closer he could see that the one man was bleeding and that is when the other man ran away,” Steyn said. He added that the victim was not a known resident of Sophiatown, and it was suspected that he came from Newlands. Steyn added that the deceased was estimated to be around 22 – 25 years of age.
