Are we ready?

Paperless classrooms is the new trend in education but if we're going to compete on a global level, let's do it right.

Paperless classrooms have come to Gauteng, arguably making us world contenders on the education front.

However, the question that begs to be answered is: ARE WE READY FOR THIS?

In order for the use of these technologies to have an effective impact on our education system, our teachers need to be well trained and continuously supported – not just on the basic use of these tablets and smart boards, but also on lesson designing and planning. While as a resource the internet and devices can have a phenomenal influence on the education process, lesson delivery would be crucial to creating the necessary connection and absorption of the subject content and learning material.

Another concerning factor is that this form of teaching and learning is introduced too late in the process – this phase of the tablet roll-out only includes Matric pupils. These pupils have been using traditional methods of learning and now are faced with these new technologies. Can they master this new learning style and the necessary content so close to final exams?

Further to our teachers and pupils being prepared, are the schools prepared? While these devices are expensive and security an important factor, do the schools have the necessary security features, and infrastructure? In the initial roll-out, schools were broken into and devices stolen.

According to recent articles, some of the schools have not even received their tablets yet and smart boards have yet to be installed. Although I believe these are mere hiccups, and that soon all schools will become paperless, my major gripe is that if it is not used correctly and teachers are not trained sufficiently, it will become a useless resource.

These devices are not meant to replace a teacher, as some believe. It is meant to bridge a gap that has arisen as a result of world advancement in technology and subsequently, the need to meet the requirements of the new opportunities in employment.

But, if we’re going to do something – let’s ensure that we do it right!
