Flames lick the koppies

WESTDENE – Fire fighters contain and kill a veld fire on Melville Koppies.

On 8 June, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) was dispatched to a veld fire on Melville Koppies.

Spokesperson for the EMS, Robert Mulaudzi, said that these kind of fires were common at this time of year, when the grass is very dry.

“We urge residents to take extra precautions during winter, and not to throw cigarette butts onto the ground,” he said.

“If the grass catches alight, these fires can spread very quickly, especially if there is a strong wind. It can wreak havoc on the wildlife living in the nature reserve.”

Fortunately there was no wind, and the fire fighters were able to get the flames under control and extinguish the fire with ease.”

In case of an emergency fire, call these numbers: toll free 10177; from a cellphone 112; from a landline 011 375 5555.
