Herman Mashaba wins rotary award

AUCKLAND PARK – Businessman receives award for encouraging social and economic development.

The Rotary Club of Johannesburg conferred its 2014 Achiever of the Year Award on Herman Mashaba at the Johannesburg Country Club, Auckland Park, recently. Mashaba is a successful businessman, founder of Black Like Me, CEO of Lephatsi Investments, and co-writer of Black Like You. “The award comes in recognition of his dedication to the social and economic development of South Africa, his bold criticism of dysfunctional administrative policies, and his outstanding achievements as a role model and public benefactor,” said president of the rotary club Linda Vilakazi.

“Through this award, Mr Mashaba joins an illustrious group of individuals, whose efforts and endeavours have all contributed to improve the lives of South Africans and building strong and accountable institutions,”she added.

Others to have received the award include Professor Jonathan Janssen, Advocate Thuli Madonsela, Hugh Glenister, Minister Pravin Gordhan, former Cape Town mayor Helen Zille, Constitutional Court Judge Zak Yacoob, and former Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni.

Vilakazi added that the Rotary Club of Johannesburg was chartered in 1921 and was the first rotary club on the African continent. It has long encouraged like-minded business and community leaders to become more involved in their communities.

“Our annual Achiever of the Year Awards recognise the efforts of outstanding South Africans who have made a significant impact on the lives of their less fortunate fellow South Africans, and we are proud to be associated with such noble actions,” she concluded.
