Sophiatown Resident’s Association encourages participation
SOPHIATOWN — Members of the newly-formed resident's association look forward to forging strong relationships with its residents.
The newly formed Sophiatown Resident’s Association (SRA) held a meeting on 2 June to establish channels and initiatives with the residents.
In this regard, any Sophiatown resident or resident of a neighbouring suburb, who may be interested in becoming involved, is invited to contact any one of the executive committee members.
The association also adopted a new constitution that would foster greater community involvement through the creation of self-directed working portfolio committees.
“We will seek to mobilise the community around a matrix of portfolios that will enable members of the community to participate meaningfully in grass roots initiatives that will lead to a better life for our residents,” said the association’s co-chairperson Kevin Baaitjes.
Promoting an ethos of empowerment and proactive interaction with local government departments and initiatives such as the Joburg Roads Agency, Joburg Water and Jozi@work and with locally operating NGOs and civic groups, the resident’s association hopes to make a contribution toward job creation, social upliftment and economic development.
Baaitjes added that Sophiatown is a suburb of choice for many people who wish to re-establish the vibrant non-racial community that was once its heritage. Its residents hope to make Sophiatown a shining example of what fellow South Africans are striving toward – a diverse community working together in harmony, benefiting from a thriving local economy and enjoying a creative, healthy and safe environment.
