GALLERY and VIDEO: The highlights of the Highland Gathering

VICTORY PARK – Come drum, drum at the De La Salle Holy Cross College.

The Pipe Band and Highland Gathering event took place at De La Salle Holy Cross College on 31 May.

Residents from all over Victory Park and Gauteng descended upon the school to be part of a truly amazing experience. The day consisted of many stalls selling cultural items ranging from Celtic belts to Scottish kilts and coats of arms. Stalls also sold Celtic food such as black pudding (beef suet, oatmeal, onion and animal blood), and haggis (a savoury pudding consisting of sheep’s heart, liver and lungs).

Many medieval games were also played, such as, tossing the caber, which involves throwing a hefty log as far as you can. This is the Scottish equivalent of an iron man competition.

De La Salle Pipe Band organiser Rosemary Attwell said, “It has been a great day filled with lots of fun and music – thank you to all of the bands and visitors who came through for this special day.”

At least 25 pipe bands from all over Joburg competed in two competition arenas for trophies. Competitions were also held for Highland dancing. The highlight of the entire event was the gathering of about 200 pipe and drum band members. Together they serenaded the crowd by performing songs such as Amazing Grace and Flower of Scotland.
