Acting troupe tackles school issues

LINDEN – Thespian Acting troupe performs social plays to a high school audience.

Hoërskool Linden pupils were treated to a tailor-made stage production entitled ‘SelfYliefde’ during their general assembly on 25 May.

Three actors from the Thespian Actors Agency Lesego Molotsi, Megan Van Wyk, and Danielle Retief collaborated with Hoërskool Linden to produce a stage production that speaks closely to the hearts of many of the school’s pupils.

The production dealt with everyday school pressures and social issues, such as the stress of achieving at school, and the dangers of peer pressure.

“We worked very closely with [the] school’s counsellors to identify key social problems to portray on stage. It gave us a unique opportunity to raise attention to these issues that most pupils at the school struggle with everyday,” said van Wyk.

Retief said, “At the moment this production was a once-off matter – more of a project for the school. But we would definitely be keen to explore the possibility of taking this kind of production to other schools.”

When the production concluded the actors urged pupils to go out and make a difference by submitting their thoughts and stories on the school’s Facebook page. “It only felt natural to create a digital space where the school’s pupils can have a voice about social issues with one another. We have also made use of Facebook to check on how the progress of this initiative will continue to develop,” Molotsi said.
