Cockroaches at hospital

PARKTOWN – Cockroaches allegedly infest a number of wards in the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital.

A Victory Park resident recently saw cockroaches scurrying around the floor at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital in Parktown.

Ellen Levy witnessed what she has called “disgusting” when she took her grandson’s caregiver to the hospital for urgent eye treatment.

“The whole place is a disgrace. It is dirty and I am disgusted a health care provider can be infested. The place is also too hot and heat is a good breeding ground for cockroaches,” she said.

According to DA Member of the Oversight Committee in the Premier’s Office and Legislature, Jack Bloom, the situation is particularly bad in the ophthalmic department in wards 266 and 267.

“Staff at the hospital shrug their shoulders about the cockroaches that plague the hospital. It is shocking that poor hygiene allows cockroaches to flourish in parts of the hospital,” said Bloom.

According to Bloom, high standards of cleanliness are non-negotiable in a hospital where infection risks need to be minimised.

Bloom called on the hospital management to attend to the problem as soon as possible.

Gauteng Health Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said MEC Qedani Mahlangu will be visiting the hospital on 8 May to “investigate the issue raised and all other matters raised and she will implement interventions”.
